When it Rains, it Pours...

The den is unnaturally dark,
like when a morning storm darkens the sky
and the street lights flicker back to life...

This time, the windows are covered
with a deep blue plastic sheet,
protecting the house from the debris raining down...

Finally, after years of running for buckets
at the first sound of rain,
a new roof is being installed...

You know you are a grown up
when a new roof is more exciting
than a new tube of lipstick...

I can hear what sounds like a herd of buffalo,
tromping up there, banging and scraping
and then dumping decades of shingles
over the side, to the gangway below...

The house is swaying and shaking
to the rhythm of their destruction...

Apparently, the roof has been shingled over
so many times that the original wooden slats are still there.
It makes for a lot to tear up
and to send flying below...

I heard of a neighbor who was having her roof replaced
and she asked the roofers
to not bang on the roof so loudly...

HAH!!!

They can make as much noise as they want...

We are getting a new roof!

It's a cool, damp day around here
and autumn has blown summer away for good...

Yesterday's storm took its toll on the trees
and soon they will have that melancholy, bare look
that is ideal for trick or treaters...

Time for more comfort food to be sure!

Maybe meatloaf tonight...

Speaking of comfort food,
I met a close friend last night for dinner
to celebrate her birthday
and we ate at The Publican...

The restaurant is comprised of long,
almost Oktoberfest style tables...

It is brightly lit, boisterous and feels old fashioned
in some ways...

The waiters wear red and white gingham shirts
and large, white aprons...

The menu is decidedly carniverous,
assorted in unique combinations and flavors...

This was one of our favorite dishes of the evening...

The Publican is not the place for an intimate dinner,
or for those who have an issue with personal space,
but it is lively and fun...

It was good to spend time with my friend,
after a day of jury duty
and the wind blown late day rain...

After the roof is finished, let the rains come...

Once again I will welcome that comforting sound...
